William Golding was born when the Titanic sunk! His father named Alec was a schoolmaster at Marlborough, Wiltshire. Alec Golding was a socialist with a strong commitment to scientific rationalism. Alec Golding had also written textbooks on botany, chemistry, zoology, physics, and geography, and was an accomplished musician, playing the violin, cello, viola, flute, and piano. Golding's mother named Mildred was active in the Women's Suffrage Movement. He was a writer and a veteran in the military. William Golding went to Oxford University. There he studied Philosophy and English literature. He graduated from Oxford University in 1935 and entered the Royal Navy in 1940. He was a lieutenant for five years. He married Ann Brook-field, an analytical chemist in September 30, 1939 and they had two children, Judy and David. Golding started writing at the age of seven. Golding's faith that every detail of human life has a religious significance is one reason why he is unique among new writers in the 50s. He became a major novelist at age 43 after writing "Lord of the Fies" in 1954 which was originally named "The Strangers Within". The novel was rejected by twenty-one publishers before Faber & Faber accepted it. Golding stopped teaching in 1961 and devoted himself entirely to writing. William Golding's service in World War II was the most affective in writing Lord of the Fies.

World War II began in 1935 and lasted through 1945, a six year war. The war was carried out on land, sea, and air and involved the mobilisation of over 100 million military personnel. The three root causes of the war was the Prussian Militarism, Adolf Hitler, and the Appeasement. The Prussian Militarism made Germany so powerful and made it possible for a man like Adolf Hitler to gain total control of it. Adolf Hitler was an Austrian politician, madman, and a political genius. The appeasement was the desire to avoid violence helping Hitler rebuild the German military. The total death of the whole war was roughly about 72 million. Around 47 million civilians were killed, 20 million dead from war-related disease and famine. William Golding's service in World War II was the most affective in writing Lord of the Fies. Golding fought in the Royal Navy and was briefly involved in the pursuit and sinking of Germany's battleship, the Bismarck. He also participated in the invasion of Normandy on D-Day. William Golding and his wife moved back to Perranarworthal where he died of a heart attack on June 19, 1993. He was buried in the village churchyard at Bowerchalke, South Wiltshire. His wife Ann Brook died in 1995. He was called "the most important practicing novelist in English.
